Social Studies

January 12, 2010 by

Hi everyone!  Today was an awesome day especially in social studies.  We are studying Europe and the countries in the former Soviet Union.  We “boarded a plane” and visited  Kazakhstan to decide whether it is a strong candidate for the “Geo Games” (a made up idea that is similar to the olympics) or not.  We learned about its civil and political rights, poverty rate, and the standard of living there.  We then rated these categories the same way the Freedom House would (the organization that rates countries on how free they are).  We rated Kazakhstan by a scale of one to seven, one being the best and seven being the worst.  We all had  a great time doing this.

Sports

Yesterday, my friends and I, who are all on the crew team, did an intense workout in BC High’s extensive weight room. We followed instructions from not only our coach, but various coaches who float through the weight room to help students or work out themselves. After this, we watched the Freshman A basketball team triumph in overtime over Brockton, a fierce rival. We had a great time and will continue to have fun with a game pretty much every other day. This day really shows the camaraderie that BC High Athletics bring to the school.

Last week, I had my first Eagle (a prospective incoming student)!  I was privileged to have an Eagle and was quite proud.  At the end of the day, he told me that he had a fun time, so I hope that B.C. High is the right school for him.  Tomorrow, there are going to be loads of after school activities including a social, various clubs, and a holiday movie to end the night.  Finally, On Friday we have a Liturgy Day.  It is our last day of school before winter break! Everyone is anxious!  Have happy holidays and a happy new year.

Eagle for a Day

November 20, 2009 by

Well, today I was afforded the priviledge to host an Eagle. We went to classes and I had a great time. I know that he had a good time seeing what classes were like at BC High. We went to all of my classes and during free period went to the Library, where he showed me that there was an online bookstore. I wish I had this opportunity when I came into Arrupe, because when I went there were no Eagles for a Day in just opened Arrupe Division. I guarantee that if you have the means to come for just one day, you won’t regret it and will have a great time.

On Monday and Tuesday the BC High Arrupe  Division held a 3-on-3 basketball tournament!  My team finished with a record of 0-4, but I had fun anyway (which  is all that matters)!   An eighth grade team won the tournament, so all my 7th grade friends felt the same way as I did. (Their records were better than ours, though.)  Also on Monday, an intramural street hockey league formed to play on Mondays and Thursdays. There are two divisions, one that only plays on Mondays, and one that only plays on Thursdays ( I am in the league that plays on Thursdays).  Each team has 8-10 players, and slight body contact is allowed which will only make the games better!  A week or two ago, a faculty member was in an accident, and the entire B.C. High community is assisting him and his family.  That is what I like most about our school – everyone sticks together and acts like a family.  Please keep the injured faculty member in your prayers and thoughts!  Grades close for first trimester during the first week in Dec., so everyone is working hard to close out the term well (Those among us who haven’t performed as well as they would like may have a severe case of indigestion on Thanksgiving).  Eagle for a Day has started  up again.  This is a program that allows prospective students to experience a school day like a BC High student.  All of the prospective Eagles  have been really great guys, and their student guides all look forward to having them come!  I hope that, if you are signed up to be an Eagle for a Day but have not yet visited, you have a great day and love our school like I did.  My wonderful experience as an Eagle last year made me decide that B.C. High Arrupe Division was right for me!  I hope it is for you too!

First Overdue BC High Bloggers Moment

November 16, 2009 by

My overdue first post for the blog has now arrive without further delay (hope this works). Guess I should start with recent happenings, for example the big game that happened last week Friday. It also marked the return of those who came back from Kairos 49, which I’m proud to say that I attended. When they say that it’s truly an experience anyone who goes to BC High must have, they mean it. Reports also came out this past Friday considering the fact that Parent Conferences were this past Tuesday. It’s interesting how much can truly transpire on one day.
On a separate note, an encore performance of Biloxi Blues, which is being performed by BC High’s finest, is to occur this weekend. Cant wait to see what this one’s about considering I’ve been hearing much good news about it. Next minute you know it, it’ll be time for the one acts.

Football Games

November 8, 2009 by

This Friday I went to the BC High versus Xaverian football game. Even though they didn’t win, the team played hard. I had a great time with my friends. It was great to see all the fans that were there. Parents, alumni, and students showed the camaraderie that comes from being at BC High. This was a great way to end the first quarter of the year.

Happy Halloween a day early (or late as I’m posting this on November 1st)!  Today was great because many teachers and staff dressed up in costumes (all of the staff are great!!!).  Today I had a science quiz, a math quiz, and a latin culture quiz – - all of which I felt that I knew well.  In computers, we looked at some really cool optical illusions.  In social studies, we made our own demography charts.    In English, we got back our test on three stories from the Junior Great Books series and a grammar quiz .  At lunch, my buddies and I talked about homework, sports, and how the Iowa football team is somehow still undefeated. ( how can they be ranked higher than Penn State?)  After school we had a soccer game against Day Middle School and won!  I think we set an Arrupe reccord for the best record for any team because we finished 7 and 2.  Give it up for the 7th grade soccer team!

Father-Son Communion Breakfast

October 25, 2009 by

Today, my Dad and I went to the 5th annual Father-Son Communion Breakfast, an event where fathers and sons from the entire school come together, have mass, and hear a keynote speaker speak about his life. In the past, the speakers have included Steve Grogen, the former quarterback for the New England Patriots, and the son of a WWII submarine commander, who sent years looking, and eventually finding, his father’s sub. This year, the speaker was Lydon Byers, the notorious fighter from the days of the Big-Bad-Bruins. He spoke of how he came to the Bruins with his friend Gordy Klusak. The thing that struck me from his speech though was his way to figure out if a situation was good or bad. He said, “If you are in a situation and say ‘Should I…’, don’t do it.” This is a mantra that goes along with BC High’s hope of turning every young man who walks through its halls to turn into a Man For Others. An MFO, as BC High guys call it, is a man who doesn’t have to always make the right decision, but is responsible for his actions, because those actions don’t just affect himself, but everyone around him.

Convocation, Orientation, and the Retreat

October 18, 2009 by

It is hard to believe 6 weeks have already passed since the convocation, and orientation. The transition to High School has not been as bad as I expected, since the teachers, though they teach challenging courses, have been very welcoming and have in only twenty or so days taught us more than we learned in a semester at my old middle school. This Wednesday, the freshman class had a  retreat. During the retreat, my senior mentor, a senior who the school matches to homeroom, and a supervising teacher had us discuss issues we were having, and how to help other people if they are having issues. I had an exceptional time, and hope to continue until the end of the quarter.
