Hockey Season

As some of you may have known, I was on the varsity hockey team this winter. We had an impressive run and i am very sorry to see the season go. We made it to the Super 8 semi-finals but lost to #1 seed Malden Catholic 4-2. It was a great year and i appreciate all the dedicated fans that came to all of our games, even the ones that were an hour and a half away at Merrimack College. I want to thank coach Flaherty and coach Roach for an amazing season. Hopefully next year will be just as good.

More than halfway through the school year…

It’s February and we are well into the second trimester. We haven’t had a full week of school since December due to the snow storms. School is getting more challenging, but is definitely manageable. I have joined the Arrupe Wrestling team. My team and I always have a good time going to other schools and meeting different kids from all over. Wrestling is a lot of fun. With these sports, we start to develop a stronger friendship. Also, with doing a sport, it has helped me learn time management. At the beginning of the year, I did not think I would be able to do any extra curricular activities. However, I balance my time between wrestling and my schoolwork.

I have also started up a Lacrosse Club. This club is going to start back up when the cold weather breaks. Lacrosse Club is where we do a variety of different drills in order to prepare for lacrosse season. Many of my friends have joined this club. I thought this would be good to prepare, so when lacrosse tryouts start, it will not have been a year since some of us had played. It is great that the school encourages you to start up a club if there is not one that interests you.

The weeks are going by so fast. We have been working hard and things are settling in for us. We had our first Community Service Day at the Long Island Shelter Farm in Quincy. At first, I didn’t know what to expect, but soon realized this place helps homeless people get meals. Also, the Shelter gives these people essential job skills and referrals so they can get their life back on track. When we were there, we performed several tasks. We had prepared their tomatoes for the winter and dragged soil up a hill to be used for the rest of the farm. Challenging, but rewarding work for people less fortunate than ourselves.

At our Father-Son Breakfast last Sunday, Ty Warren from the New England Patriots and 2-time Super Bowl Champion was our guest speaker. He spoke to us about the obstacles he over came coming from a single parent home as well as being raised by his Grandparents. While waiting for Mr. Warren, we had a few laughs with Jimmy Tingle, a Boston Comedian that has appeared on HBO and 60-Minutes. His son is in the 8th grade at our school. He was really entertaining and truly warmed up the crowd.

Tip of the week: Always try to use Homework Club and Silent Study Hall to your advantage. This helps you break down your homework load and have less to do when you get home which creates more free time to catch up with friends from the neighborhood or just simply relax.

First Quater

I can’t believe that the first quarter is already over. It has just flown by. It feels like just yesterday that we started. It was a huge jump from Arrupe to the High school, but I feel like the Arrupe teachers prepared me well for it. I feel like my grades are doing well and im excited to see my grades and how I’ve improved from progress report. I am hoping that the remainder of the year is as good and as fun as the first quarter. I hope everyone has a fun time on Halloween and that everyone does well for grades

I can’t believe that my first month is over. It feels like yesterday I just started. Also, this is nothing like how I thought it would be. I thought that I would be overloaded every night with homework. I also thought that my teachers would be strict. But even most of all, I thought I wouldn’t be able stand the fact that there were no girls at my school. The first week in, these thoughts had definitely changed. All of my teachers are innovative and funny in their own way. Homework is most definitely manageable. And lastly, every applicant’s biggest fear is truthfully a transition for the better. The mono-gender setting helps us become more focused in class. Well, what a first month. I have been learning so much within this time it is almost unbelievable.

Hi everyone,

I’m so sorry that I haven’t blogged in a while, but I have been really busy lately now that spring sports are around the corner. Tomorrow, track is beginning, and I’m so excited. Lacrosse and baseball tryouts are also going on right now, so I hope that all of the guys are trying their best. In track, there are many events that students can participate in. 100 meter, 200 meter, the mile, high jump, long jump, and shotput are just some of the great track events offered in the Arrupe division. In school, I am learning about living and non-living organisms in science, how to solve multi-variable equations in math, the Sahara Desert and how people adapt to its intense heat in Social Studies, and how to proof paragraphs in English. I am continuing to love school, and I am so glad I chose BC High.

Clubs

It has been a long time since my last update, so I have to talk about the most diverse thing at BC HIgh, clubs. There are about 96 clubs here and sometimes it seems like I’m a member of every one! The reason for this is the open feeling that all clubs give off. I am a part of Model UN, where guys from all grades come together and debate issues; Certamen, a quiz game which centers around Latin and Rome, and the Screaming Eagle’s Bowling Club, which meets weekly on Thursdays and go bowl at Boston Bowl on Morrissey Blvd. I feel that getting involved in clubs and activities is the best way to become quickly immersed in the school, and is a wicked good time.

December Break and Mid-terms

Over the last month, two crucial events of the school year came and went in a matter of three weeks. The first event was Christmas break, a span of (if can you believe it) 17 days. Over vacation, the giving spirit of BC High was best demonstrated by the way 20 or so guys trekked through the nor’easter to get to BC High for community service. We went to Bayside Expo Center for the annual “Christmas in the City,” a yearly event where underprivileged youth come from all over the city for one day of fun and presents without worry. For six short hours, volunteers from BC High, along with various other schools and community groups, helped coördinate buses and man the multitude of carnival style activities. In the end, 2000+ people showed up through the turbulent storm. The kids seemed to have a great time and the volunteers were happy to see the kids happy. The other event was the other annual event on Morrissey Blvd, Mid-terms. Mid-terms are a four-day “event,” where all of your yearly classes give a cumulative examination on what you learned over the course of the year. Even with the amount of topics that would be covered, most were nervous, but not many were genuinely scared. The teachers did a great job in preparing us for the exams and I wasn’t surprised by anything. In conclusion, December is one of the best months of the year (obviously), but January is still fun, but Mid-terms are a necessary evil.

I guess I’ve really been slacking all things considered. I’m not afraid to be honest, but I havent forgotten my duty and responsibility.

That aside, time to do an update. Since the last I’ve post a good deal has occurred at BC High since the New Year. Classes has resumed, and some of us seniors are still finishing and tying up the loose ends of the college process, which is no joking matter. Though it’s not as difficult as one would initially think considering we’ve been helped along the way step by step from our guidance councilors since the beginning of the year. I can safely say that I’ve finished applying to about 11 or 12 schools now, and most of my fellow classmates have already heard back from their early decision and action schools.

It’s kinda funny to look back on how times have changed. Four years ago around this time, we had just been finishing up our freshmen semester courses and guidance class; the same is being done now, but those of us who are involved with such actions aren’t still the young boys who needed direction. No, now we’re the young men moving on to the next form of education in our lives. Times have definitely changed.

Aside from that, work on the One Acts have now been finishing up, it’ll be interesting to see considering how they’ve been over the years. Good times, good memories.

I shall now follow with exams. (Oh, joy.) Next week, we’ve got them, and the setup is a new one considering the past three years, which should help to accommodate the sophomores and their mid-year exam essays as well as those who require make-up exams due to scheduling conflicts.

I’d not like to conclude on this note. I’ve never seen so many seniors who usually don’t give much to the Mite Box as I did today actually give a deal of it to the cause today. The cause was towards a program that’d help the victims in Haiti after the natural disaster that had struck not too long ago. Our prayers have gone out towards those affected there and to any of their relatives here in the US, especially for those in our community. Let’s hope that the future brings good news to come.
